Enough with “Dobroho dnya!”: How to Greet People Properly During the Day in Ukrainian

There are standard greeting phrases that should not be altered

In the Ukrainian language, there are established forms of greeting, and deviating from them constitutes a linguistic error. Philologist Svitlana Chernyshova explained how to greet others correctly. She says that “Dobroho dnya!” is an incorrect form of greeting, but can be used at the end of a conversation as a farewell.

Greetings are part of linguistic etiquette. And they have their established forms in the Ukrainian language. The most common and widespread incorrect forms of greeting are “Dobroho dnia!” and “Dobroho vechora!”

But this form is incorrect!

But this form is incorrect!

The word “dobryi” is a wish for all the best throughout the day. But depending on the time of day, there is a specific formula. Therefore, the correct forms of greeting are:

  • Good morning!
  • Good day! or Good afternoon!
  • Good evening! or Good evening!
  • Good night! or Good evening!

In the morning, we use “dobroho” because it marks the start of the day and conveys a wish for the entire day. As for “dobroho dnia” and “dobroho vechora,” these are simply statements of fact—it’s a good day!

But you can say “dobroho dnya” at the end of a conversation by adding the word “bazhayu” — “I want to wish you a good day!”

But you can say “dobroho dnya” at the end of a conversation by adding the word “bazhayu” — “I want to wish you a good day!”

Proof of the long-established form is the Ukrainian carol “Good evening to you, master of the house!” Therefore, there is no need to argue; simply use the established norms of greeting.

Although there aren’t as many variations in greetings as there are in expressions of gratitude and the word “thank you,” there are standard linguistic constructions that should be used.

And for informal settings, you can use other greetings—"Hello!" or "Hi!"

And when saying goodbye, you can add “Nice to see you!”, “Nice to meet you!”, or “Nice to get to know you!”.
